A Doggy Portrait in Precious Metal Clay

I can finally now show you my first precious metal clay little sculpture. Well, sculpture might give you the wrong idea but it’s a non-abstract three-dimensional form.
I had to wait with this post until I could get the pendant to the person it was meant for. It was a sort of belated Christmas surprise.
So, here it is.

I did not plan out this pendant at all. I had a ball of silver PMC left because I was working on another piece when the idea hit me. It was the kind of “I wonder if I can” thought. Honestly, I never really expected it to turn out well. I used a photo as a reference and next thing I knew, it actually looked like her.

I am quiet proud of it and I think I made someone happy as well. It hardly can get any better than that!

Neat ways to keep your brain warm

I am looking out the window and it’s snowing once again. We are in full swing of winter and it is an important time to keep your family’s brains warm.

So I browsed through the whole array of handmade fleece hats on Etsy and picked out a couple of samples for you.

The last of the Cremation Memory Pendants

A couple of years ago I used to have a website where I sold pet cremation pendants or memory pendants.
They were made from the same glass I use on all my jewelry but contained a very small portion of ashes or cremains.

I have to admit, the cremation pendants were not my idea. A colleague at work made me develop a pattern because she wanted something special for her cat that had just pasted. I believe she had looked around on the internet and found someone who fused ashes into glass and since she knew that I was fusing glass, she came to me with the request.
It took me more than four months to come up with a pattern that would reliably yield the same results pretty much every time (I would say about 95% of the time) and still display the ashes in a way that looked nice.

Then, about a year ago, I finally decided to shut down the website and stop selling the cremation pendants. The main reason was that I just couldn’t deal with asking  people for money anymore at a time when they had just suffered a great loss. It always felt so petty, greedy and entirely inappropriate.
The whole thing was just very stressy and emotionally draining.
For the past year I had still made some for friends and colleagues (basically people that I know and that I wouldn’t ask for money anyway) but it’s time now for me to altogether stop making cremation pendants. The emotional drain is still there and maybe even more than with animals I didn’t know and I realized that I am starting to really dread making them.
So these are the last of the cremation pendants. They are in memory of Ali’s “Sunshine”.

    Adore And Adorn Your Pet!

The adore part of that statement is obviously a lot more important! You have to hug them and squeeze them and call them George or Rocky or Sylvester!

Out of that adoration may come a desire for little things that make it more visible. We buy gorgeous collars, give them haircuts and purchase that sporty or fancy raincoat. So, I guess it is just a continuation of that trend to think about pet jewelry.

Turquoise and Blue Heart Pet Pendant

I know there is plenty of people out there that probably think I’m out of my mind, but let me explain to you how this thought started.

A number of years back my best four-legged friend Max had to go for a very risky surgery. I was so scared and felt absolutely helpless. So, although I am normally not superstitious, I needed some kind of outlet for all that fear. I made him a little fused glass pendant that had the Chinese symbol for ‘good fortune’ fused into it. The day I had to drop him off, I put it on his collar. I’m sure it probably had no influence on how the surgery went but it was a little ritual that gave me hope. Everything went well and I had my baby back safe and sound.

Green and Purple Heart Pet PendantThat was the situation in which I had worked out all the details for a pet pendant without ever meaning to create a product.

So now, I’m making them not for emergency situation but because they really look neat. And although you don’t necessarily need pet jewelry to do so, it’s a unique way to celebrate your best friend.
